Spring Pollinators

Our Monday playgroup in the woods has started back up.  Here is what we did this week.

Finger Rhyme:

Here is the beehive. Where are the bees?

Hidden away where nobody sees.

(Show closed fist)

Watch and you’ll see them come out of the hive.

One, two, three, four, five.

(pull one finger out at a time)

(tickle with the finger bees)

Craft Activity:

Make pipe cleaner pollinators. Kids can make bugs, birds, bats, etc., or they can make up something to make. Maybe a new bug species.

Find flowers to pollinate with the pollinators that you make. This activity will use their fine motor skills while making the bugs. Then it will give them an opportunity to explore the area around them and find flowers to pollinate.

Questions to ask:

  • How did they find the flower? Color, scent, etc.
  • Can some pollinators see/smell differently than use?
  • What would happen to the flowering plants if there were no pollinators?
  • What do we use in daily life that is a flowering plant? Maple syrup, flour, corn, lettuce, apples, blueberries, etc.
  • How should we give thanks to the pollinators? Plant gardens, not use chemicals on plants that could kill them, say “thank you” to the butterflies, bees, raise honeybees
